You may find that your machine boots in Verbose mode without your telling it to if the PRAM or NVRAM needs resetting. Verbose mode will yield a startup with lots of lines of white text on top of a black background, followed by either your login screen or the desktop at the end without the Apple logo or Welcome to Macintosh screen. Here's how to reset your NVRAM and PRAM:
